"Dowry System ; A bigger threat to Society"
By Tasleem Wani
Dowry system commonly known as 'Deheaj' in traditional languages is one of the most ancient practices of India and Oxford dictionary defines it as ‘an amount of property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage’.
It is one of the biggest menaces of the Indian society. Though it is condemned by every modern citizen of this country but it still flourishes at a very large scale in our society. Dowry is a social evil in the society, which has caused unimaginable tortures and crimes towards women. The evil has taken lives of women from all stratas of society - be it poor, middle class or the rich. However it is the poor who succumb and fall prey to it, more due to their lack of resources, awareness and education.
Now a days, rural society has also became much prone to this dowry system and they used to glorify this evil in many ways and at many places. A kind of competition has emerged among families and in society to count who has got more dowry from daughter in law and who has given much of it to their daughters. It is really the height of ignorance prevailing in our society.
According to NCRB data, 21 dowry deaths are reported across the country every day. The conviction rate, however, is less than 35%. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) states that in 2015, as many as 7634 women died in the country due to dowry harassment.
Data reveals that police have chargesheeted around 93.7 per cent of the accused.
But only 34.7% have been convicted. The remaining cases are still pending in various courts.
"Important steps to eradicate dowry"
"Educate your daughters , Encourage them to have their own career, Teach them to be independent and responsible, Treat them (your daughter) equally without any discrimination, Don't encourage the practice of giving or taking dowry, Better execution of anti-dowry laws and stringent and quicker action by police, Report every single dowry case and social boycots to those who accept or give dowry".
Let us all join hands to stop this social menace in society and to protect our daughters.
